According to Wikipedia, bicycle rollers are a type of bicycle trainer that make it possible to ride a bicycle indoors without moving forward. However, unlike other types of bicycle trainers, rollers do not attach to the bicycle frame, and the rider must balance him or herself on the rollers while training. Durango’s history of roller races started back in 1990 with many of the town’s national and world champions competing over the years. The current record is near 44 mph average, but according to Fort Lewis College Cycling Team Director Dave Hagen, “someone is bound to beat it this year.”

“I hope that we get a lot of competitors signed up; it’s really a fun event,” said owner Phil Brennan. Winners will receive a $100 gift card to the Irish Embassy for first place, $50 gift card for second place, and $25 gift card for third place.

Arrive early for a special autograph signing from Team Garmin-Sharp-Barricuda (USA), including Durango’s own Thomas Danielson. Other team members include Tyler Farrar (USA), Nathan Haas (AUS), Alex Howes (USA), Peter Stetina (USA), Christian Vandevelde (USA), David Zabriskie (USA), and Lachlan David Morton (AUS). Signing will start at the Irish Embassy at 7pm.

A big thanks goes out to Dave Hagen and the Fort Lewis College Cycling Team for helping to organize the event.

That menu includes the items listed above, along with frittatas (both veggie and meat), a scrumptious breakfast wrap, French toast, homemade granola, and of course the traditional Irish breakfast (known at the Embassy as “The Irishman’s Cure”, it consists of bacon, sausage, black and white pudding, eggs, grilled tomato and Irish potatoes in a cream sauce). There are items for every appetite, including vegetarian dishes and a gluten free chocolate torte.

And for those of you still wondering what the heck Irish Freckle Bread is, according to Brennan “it’s a traditional homemade Irish bread with sautéed onions. We use raisins for our ‘freckles’.”

Breakfast at the Pub is now being served seven days a week, from 6:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

June 6th at 8pm we’ll have a draw where you pick your teams to win. There will be a $5, $10, and $20 draw. The money will then be handed out as prize money; for the $5 draw it will be $50 to first place and $30 to second place. $10: $90 to first place and $60 to second place; $20: $210 for first place and $110 for second place. Call it the luck of the Irish, but the Irish Embassy Pub seems to be thriving in this down economy. On Friday, Feb. 3^rd they’ll be opening their latest expansion to the ever popular pub with the Underground, an evening nightclub venue. “We’ve listened to people around town and it seemed that college students wanted a place to dance and have fun, where they could feel safe and really let their hair down. The post-college crowd wanted the same thing, but on a more subdued level. By creating the Underground, we’re able to accomplish both. The Underground will feature live bands and dance music, appealing to the younger crowd, which will then open up the Ambassador’s Lounge as a place for the older crowd to hang out, without having to shout over music to have a conversation,” said manager Phil Brennan. “We’ll be adding a cocktail menu and whiskey flights to the lounge, making it more of the upscale bar that we’ve intended all along. A traditional Irish pub accommodates many demographics. By acquiring the new space we can cater to families, the younger crowd, the older crowd, and everyone in between.”

The Irish Embassy Pub opened in the summer of 2008. The upstairs bar and dining area can accommodate approximately 150 people, and is regularly used for live music and the weekly Sunday Irish Jam Sessions. Mick Ward’s Ambassador’s Lounge, the downstairs area named for the late owner, has its own bar and seating area (and can hold up to 85 people, or 50 seated), and is available to rent out for events. “We marry ‘em and bury ‘em” said pub co-owner Jerry Hembury. “The pub can host any event, from a wedding reception to a wake, with every life event in between – just like they do at the pubs in Ireland.”

By adding the Underground, they’ve expanded their capacity by another 150 people, and have added another full bar, bathrooms, stage area, pool table, darts, televisions and shuffleboard. The Underground is accessible through the downstairs of the Irish Embassy.

Men, Women and Kids SOUGHT TO PARTICIPATE IN HEAD-SHAVING EVENTS NATIONWIDE TO RAISE FUNDS FOR CHILDHOOD CANCER RESEARCH

Volunteers baldly stand in solidarity with the 160,000 kids diagnosed with cancer each year while raising money to fund pediatric cancer research

Durango, CO Sept. 1, 2011 – The St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising money to fund the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long and healthy lives, has issued a lofty challenge to everyone who wants to help raise money for pediatric cancer research: Be a hero for kids with cancer by shaving your head in return for pledges of financial support from friends and family.

Participants find that shaving their head in solidarity with the approximately 160,000 children who are diagnosed with cancer each year and frequently lose their hair as a result of treatment, is a small sacrifice in comparison to what these children endure.

On Sept. 17^th (Halfway to St. Paddy’s Day), 15-20 people will shave their heads to help Conquer Kids’ Cancer! The event will be held locally at The Irish Embassy Pub. We’ll kick off the evening starting at 8pm with live music from Patrick Crossing. The head-shavings will commence around 9pm with Robert Frank of Euphoria Salon as the barber. Drink specials and giveaways will be happening throughout the night.

The Irish Embassy wanted to get involved as “St. Baldrick” is an invented saint, combining St. Patrick and baldness.

Owners Jerry Hembury and Mike Graham were visiting a pub in Las Vegas that was having a St. Baldrick’s fundraiser, and thought it was a great idea. Though neither will be able to be in town for the head shaving event, Manager Phil Brennan will be on the list of shavees. “I think this is for a great cause – a lot of my family and friends have been affected by cancer and I think this is a fun, different way to bring awareness to this terrible disease, while raising some (hopefully a lot) of money for this battle against cancer. I challenge locals to volunteer to shave their head as well – I think this will be the first of many years (for the Embassy) doing this type of fundraiser.”
