Call it the luck of the Irish, but the Irish Embassy Pub seems to be thriving in this down economy. On Friday, Feb. 3^rd they’ll be opening their latest expansion to the ever popular pub with the Underground, an evening nightclub venue. “We’ve listened to people around town and it seemed that college students wanted a place to dance and have fun, where they could feel safe and really let their hair down. The post-college crowd wanted the same thing, but on a more subdued level. By creating the Underground, we’re able to accomplish both. The Underground will feature live bands and dance music, appealing to the younger crowd, which will then open up the Ambassador’s Lounge as a place for the older crowd to hang out, without having to shout over music to have a conversation,” said manager Phil Brennan. “We’ll be adding a cocktail menu and whiskey flights to the lounge, making it more of the upscale bar that we’ve intended all along. A traditional Irish pub accommodates many demographics. By acquiring the new space we can cater to families, the younger crowd, the older crowd, and everyone in between.”

The Irish Embassy Pub opened in the summer of 2008. The upstairs bar and dining area can accommodate approximately 150 people, and is regularly used for live music and the weekly Sunday Irish Jam Sessions. Mick Ward’s Ambassador’s Lounge, the downstairs area named for the late owner, has its own bar and seating area (and can hold up to 85 people, or 50 seated), and is available to rent out for events. “We marry ‘em and bury ‘em” said pub co-owner Jerry Hembury. “The pub can host any event, from a wedding reception to a wake, with every life event in between – just like they do at the pubs in Ireland.”

By adding the Underground, they’ve expanded their capacity by another 150 people, and have added another full bar, bathrooms, stage area, pool table, darts, televisions and shuffleboard. The Underground is accessible through the downstairs of the Irish Embassy.

Halfway to St. Paddy’s is almost here!!!

We’ll be starting the evening with live music from Celtic band Patrick Crossing at 8pm. Men, Women and Kids SOUGHT TO PARTICIPATE IN HEAD-SHAVING EVENTS NATIONWIDE TO RAISE FUNDS FOR CHILDHOOD CANCER RESEARCH

Volunteers baldly stand in solidarity with the 160,000 kids diagnosed with cancer each year while raising money to fund pediatric cancer research

Durango, CO Sept. 1, 2011 – The St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising money to fund the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long and healthy lives, has issued a lofty challenge to everyone who wants to help raise money for pediatric cancer research: Be a hero for kids with cancer by shaving your head in return for pledges of financial support from friends and family.

Participants find that shaving their head in solidarity with the approximately 160,000 children who are diagnosed with cancer each year and frequently lose their hair as a result of treatment, is a small sacrifice in comparison to what these children endure.

On Sept. 17^th (Halfway to St. Paddy’s Day), 15-20 people will shave their heads to help Conquer Kids’ Cancer! The event will be held locally at The Irish Embassy Pub. We’ll kick off the evening starting at 8pm with live music from Patrick Crossing. The head-shavings will commence around 9pm with Robert Frank of Euphoria Salon as the barber. Drink specials and giveaways will be happening throughout the night.

The Irish Embassy wanted to get involved as “St. Baldrick” is an invented saint, combining St. Patrick and baldness.

Owners Jerry Hembury and Mike Graham were visiting a pub in Las Vegas that was having a St. Baldrick’s fundraiser, and thought it was a great idea. Though neither will be able to be in town for the head shaving event, Manager Phil Brennan will be on the list of shavees. “I think this is for a great cause – a lot of my family and friends have been affected by cancer and I think this is a fun, different way to bring awareness to this terrible disease, while raising some (hopefully a lot) of money for this battle against cancer. I challenge locals to volunteer to shave their head as well – I think this will be the first of many years (for the Embassy) doing this type of fundraiser.”

Shaving Heads for a Good Cause

We’re changing things up this year for our Halfway to St. Paddy’s Day Party, September 17th. We’re sponsoring a fundraiser for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation – a cross between St. Patrick and baldness. The St. Baldrick’s Foundation raises money for kids with childhood cancer. We’re looking for volunteers to get their head shaved, that evening at the pub. (Phil is signing up so you’d better too!) All volunteers then need to get people to sponsor them to have their head shaved – that’s how we raise the money. Everyone who volunteers will receive a $20 gift card to the Embassy and lots of good karma and brownie points in heaven (if that’s what you believe in). Robert Frank from Euphoria Salon will be our barber for the evening, and we’ll have live music going throughout. The Embassy Awards Iron Horse Riders

The idea emerged from owner Jerry Hembury. Back in his lifeguarding days, Jerry used to compete in rough water swims in Southern California.The La Jolla rough water event would give ” Survivor Medals” if you completed the swim. Jerry liked the idea and brought it with him to Durango. This Saturday for the first time, riders (not racers) in the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic will receive a medal when they reach Silverton. The medal was based on a previous Iron Horse poster and designed by the Irish Embassy’s marketing and graphic designer, Cindy Coleman. Jerry, Cindy, and Embassy manager Phil Brennan sat with Race Director Gaige Sippy and Patti Zink and brainstormed their idea earlier this year. The Embassy has wanted to provide this sponsorship for many years and are very excited to have their idea come to fruition.
