Irish Embassy adds a punch to the holidays!

“Everyone enjoys counting down to Christmas – why not add some fun to it?” said Irish Embassy Pub owner Sarah Donaldson. “And the punching…well I thought it would be fun!”

“Punching” you ask? Beginning December 1, The Irish Embassy is adding an Advent Calendar to their holiday fun, and the first customer of the day gets to punch out the daily treat. Daily prizes might be a discounted food or drink item, extra loyalty card points – there are 24 different days so each day is a new surprise! Whatever the daily treat is, every customer will be able to take advantage of the discount or special. The 24 present “tree” can be seen at the top of the steps as you walk into the Pub.

As another thank you to loyal customers, the Embassy is once again offering their Red Envelope Promotion in the month of December, in which they give away thousands of dollars in food and prizes.

“It’s our way of giving back to the community. We’ve had great success with it the past three years,” said Embassy owner Mike Graham.

What is the Red Envelope Promotion? During the month of December, dine at the Irish Embassy Pub and your table will be given a sealed red envelope. One thousand envelopes will be handed out in all, and each one will contain a prize. Prizes range from 5-50% off your meal, a free Embassy t-shirt, and one grand prize of a draft beer a day for a year. Every envelope’s a winner.

There is, of course, a catch. You cannot open your envelope when you receive it. All the envelopes must be kept until the month of January, when you return to the Pub for a meal, drink, etc. You will then bring your still sealed envelope in, have your server open it, and then claim your prize. Any already opened envelopes will be void, and all envelopes must be claimed within the month of January.

“January is usually a melancholy time after the holidays. This will give people something to look forward to.”

Red Envelopes will be given away starting December 1. You are not limited to just one envelope; return again the following day for a meal and you will receive another one. There are only 1,000 envelopes and once they’re gone, they’re gone – so head to the Irish Embassy today and celebrate your prize in January!

Free Breakfast for Veterans

The Irish Embassy Pub is offering free breakfast to all veterans and active duty military on Veterans Day, November 11, 2018, from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. “It’s because of our military and veterans that we have the freedoms we enjoy every day, and we appreciate all of those service members who have served to protect our freedoms and our way of life. We’d like to give back to them on the day they are honored by our great nation,” said Embassy owner Mike Graham.

Active and Reserve Veterans with a form of military ID will receive a free meal (including non-alcoholic drink) from a select breakfast menu.

The Irish Embassy Pub began serving breakfast in July, on Saturdays and Sundays from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. The regular breakfast menu includes a Choose Your Own Waffles option, a twist on the traditional Huevos Rancheros, and an Irish Corned Beef Hash and Eggs.

Saturday, September 22, The Irish Embassy Pub celebrated their 10th anniversary/Halfway to Paddy’s Day with Celtic music from Patrick Crossing and the Kitchen Jam Band, Irish whiskey shots, and a trip giveaway to Ireland. The evening was supported by Guinness and local distributor A&L Coors with swag and Guinness branded giveaways.

To enter the drawing you had to drink a Guinness between St. Patrick’s Day 2018, until Saturday night. The trip was won by Steven Owens. Steven was born in North Carolina and served 24 years as a Civil Engineer with the RED HORSE Expeditionary Airborne Unit in the U.S. Air Force. He now resides in Pagosa Springs and regularly attends the Sunday Irish Jam Sessions at the Pub. Steven will have until May 2019 to take the five night trip for two.

Since its inception, The Embassy has supported countless non-profits in town, most notably The Iron Horse Bicycle Classic, Fort Lewis College Athletics, Durango Devo and DYSA, and the Durango Independent Film Festival.

The Irish Embassy Pub officially opened to a packed house July 17, 2008. The pub arose out of an unlikely partnership between a local Durangoan, Mick Ward, and an Irishman, Jim Shannon. The two met while Mick was traveling Europe in the late 70s. They became great friends and spent many years visiting and traveling. When the present building became vacant, Mick contacted Jim about transforming it into an Irish pub. Jim loved the idea, and along with Jerry Hembury and Mike Graham, they transformed the space into an authentic Irish pub. The furniture, pictures on the wall, wood trim, dishes, silverware, glasses, and even some of the staff were shipped in from Ireland to complete the transformation. Over the years some of the owners have bowed out, leaving Mike Graham as the remaining owner. The Embassy includes the Steaming Bean Coffee Shop downstairs, along with a back room that was acquired in 2012 and dubbed the “Underground”.

0922181948The Embassy is available to rent for private parties, ranging from 6 people to the entire pub (if you so choose). They’re open daily at 11:00am and serve breakfast Saturday and Sunday starting at 7:00am.

Clovers for Courage: The Irish Embassy Pub launches Suicide Awareness Campaign

IE- Clovers for Courage painted rocks-webPainted rocks. They seem to be all the rage everywhere across the country (and internationally). Everywhere that is, except Durango. Cindy Coleman, owner of Duck Girl Art and the Marketing Director for the Irish Embassy Pub was traveling to Missouri this summer and painted rocks were all anyone was talking about. “We were having a family reunion and my cousins in Missouri, Illinois, and Florida were all talking about painting rocks. So I decided to look into it.”

If you Google “painted rocks” you’ll see many different groups that participate. The idea is that you paint a rock – you can paint anything on it, from rainbows to ladybugs to uplifting sayings – and you hide it in a public place for others to find. It’s a treasure hunt, a random act of kindness to brighten someone’s day. Sometimes you win a prize if you find a rock, sometimes it’s to raise money for a cause.

And raising money is exactly what the Irish Embassy Pub intends to do. “Suicides are an issue in our community and it seems that everyone is saying ‘what can I do to help? How can we prevent this from happening?’” said Phil Brennan, manager of the Irish Embassy Pub. “We thought this was a great opportunity to do something about it.”

The Irish Embassy has hidden 25 painted rocks along the river trail. “We wanted to put a spin on the Animas River being the ‘River of Lost Souls’. We all love the river and want it to remain a special place in our town. This just adds to one of the fun things you can do at the river,” said Cindy Coleman. They’re calling the project “Clovers for Courage” and each of the 25 rocks has a four-leaf clover printed on them. The lucky rocks can be brought into the Pub and redeemed for a prize, ranging from a free appetizer with a purchase of an entrée, to the golden rock – a $100 gift card to the Irish Embassy Pub. Once you’ve redeemed the rock, it has no “treasure” value, but the Irish Embassy is encouraging others to paint rocks and hide them as well. That’s where the fundraising begins.

Paint your own rock – with whatever you’d like (although clovers are fun and easy!). Be sure to coat your rock with a finish so the message/image doesn’t wash away with the weather. Then take a photo of your rock and post it to the Irish Embassy’s facebook page Then you can hide your rock. Be sure to place your rock somewhere where it won’t hurt anyone and out of the way of grass (lawnmowers). For each painted rock that it is posted to the Pub’s facebook page in September, they’ll donate $5 to the Southern Ute Community Action Program (SUCAP)’s Gatekeepers Program. “Gatekeepers are people who have been trained to engage with persons at imminent risk of suicide and connect them with professional help,” said Peter Tregillus, SUCAP Programs Developer. The training program is called QPR, with a lifesaving function as critical as CPR.  QPR stands for Question, Persuade, Refer.  SUCAP is now scheduling QPR sessions for after Labor Day.  (

San Juan Basin Public Health (SJBPH) has been promoting suicide awareness and prevention efforts in the community through their State Innovation Model (SIM) program with a Suicide Prevention Community Summit last May, suicide awareness and prevention trainings for community members, and Let’s Talk Colorado (, a stigma reduction campaign focused on increasing conversation around mental health issues. Claire Ninde, Director of Communications for SJBPH says “Every effort to support mental health and suicide prevention is welcomed and can only help to support those in our community who struggle with these issues.” More information can be found on SJBPH’s website:
